        Secure Electronic Transactions

Security can never be stressed enough on the Internet. In 1994, a multi-million dollar initiative by MasterCard and Visa, the two largest credit card companies in the world was launched. It's main goal was to develop a very secure protocol to make it absolutely safe to buy products and services on the Web. IBM, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Motorola and a number of other leaders in the IT industry together developed the "SET" protocol. SET stands for Secure Electronic Transactions. As can be expected, the project was highly acclaimed by Visa and MasterCard. They then fully recommended the project and stood behind it 100%. Today, thanks to modern 128 bit key encryption systems and e-commerce servers, companies, governments, consumers, major banks and financial institutions, can safely transact billions of dollars daily on the Internet. The SET protocol costed in excess of $ 500 Million to develop and took about 18 months of research and development.

Later, other large credit card companies like American Express, Discover and Diner's also adopted the SET protocol as the industry standard for really secure transactions on the World Wide Web. Now that the SET protocol is firmly in place and is guaranteed by major credit card companies all over the world, it can be said that e-Business seriously has a leading start over all other applications currently being used on the Internet.
