Myth and misconception No. 1: Meta tags
"Meta Tags are the key to high rankings"
This article is accurate as/of January 10, 2003
CORRECTION:
Five years ago, this could have been the case, although opinions differ on that
assumption. Meta tags were originally incorporated in a site to offer webmasters a way
to better help search engines discover what their site was all about. Soon, as might be
expected, some webmasters tried and successfully achieved in abusing this technique
by writing useless keywords into their Meta tags in an attempt to trick the search
engines to rank them higher... Today, and because of this abuse, all major search
engines, especially Google, are placing less and less importance in the mere presence
of Meta tags or their content.
Meta tags are now ignored completely by most of the major engines
As a result, since about june of 2000, nearly all of the major engines ignore Meta tags
completely. We are not saying it's not worth the extra time it takes to add them in any
site- after all, Inktomi and some of the smaller engines still give some importance to
their contents. As a standard practice, and to insure that all sites we optimize get
their best chances possible, GCIS still writes and incorporates all Meta tags in the
sites we optimize. However, they are a lot less critical than what they used to be.
Meta tags should be considered as an extremely small part of SEO. It's best to focus
your attention and your work on the actual content and marketing information of your
site.
The only way to get a much higher, prioritized ranking in all major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Alta-Vista and the others is to invest in a quality SEO program done by professionals. Contact GCIS.
